During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 a brick culvert associated with the former site of the Officers Mess at the north eastern end of the barracks site. The culvert was sub surface and set in the western angle between the northern outer wall and the long internal one. It followed a slightly curved course under the building, but it was clear that its eastern end had been cut away by the insertion of later walls indicating that this was of an early phase. The culvert was sub oval in cross section was an internal width of 0.32m and height of 0.45m. It was constructed of red bricks set in a light grey gritty mortar containing frequent chalk/lime and charcoal specks. The base of the drain lay some 0.84m below present ground level. The culvert was largely filled with grey loam containing small coal/cinder fragments and some flint pebbles. This filling produces a few pieces of animal bone and oyster shell but no closely datable material. (summarised from report)(1)
