During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 walling representing an extension to two earlier ancillery buildings (cook house and The Armourer's and Tailor's Shops) and connecting them. This new wall was 0.23m wide and survived to a height of at least 0.40m (4−5 courses). It was constructed from a mixture of red and yellow bricks set in a yellow-grey sandy mortar and included traces of a damp course comprising horizontal laid Welsh slates. The remains of an internal concrete floor, provided with a drainage gutter running parallel to the wall survived. On the south-western (internal) wall face there were the remains of two contemporary buttresses, with white glazed ceramic wall-tiles between. Towards the south-eastern end of the wall traces of a probable door threshold occurred. The north-eastern (external) face of the wall was abutted by brick-edged concrete steps which must be related to the main, stepped outside pathway adjacent. (summarised from report) (1)
