During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 a layer of tarmac connected to a pathway running along the south western side of the barracks site. It was located abutting the external wall of the Armourer's and Tailors Shop on the outside, at a higher level than the internal floor. This must be connected with the main stepped pathway, still extant, running across this part of the site. This surface incorporated a vertical concrete drain towards its south-eastern (downhill) end.
