During a watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at the site of the Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017, revealed a concrete base representing part of an external yard associated with the Troops Stables/Mobilization Store at the Grand Shaft Barracks, Western Heights. The concrete base was 5.78m (19ft) wide (NW−SE) and occurred just below the modern topsoil, towards the north-western end of the trench. It had a clearly defined north-western edge and a flat level surface, which showed a distinct 0.04m deep drainage gully, aligned north-east by south-west, towards it south-eastern side. A 1903 building plan indicates that this external yard was originally surfaced with ‘pitcher paving’ laid on 6 inches of concrete. (1)
