During a watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust through the West Sallyport of the Citadel and out to a new pumping station revealed a largely in-tact surface of granite setts clearly representing of the gate passage. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

During a watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust through the West Sallyport of the Citadel and out to a new pumping station, revealed a largely in-tact surface of granite setts clearly representing the original surface of the gate passage. Contrary to previous assumptions, this had not been extensively damaged by earlier service trenches. (1)
