Summary

Osiers Farm has traditionally been accepted as the site of the 'Brennet', the country's first modern orchard. This was established in 1533 by Henry VIII's gardener Richard Harris. The orchard contained several varieties of apples and many other orchards in Kent are said to be descended from it.

Osiers Farm, traditionally the site of 'Brennet', where Richard Harris, gardener to Henry VIII established the country's first modern orchard with imported fruit trees, in 1533. Between 105 and 140 acres in extent the gardens saw the introduction of serveral new varieties of apple and were credited as being "...the parent...of all the choice first gardens and orchards of Kent..."(1586) (1), site photographs (2,3).
