Monument details

HER Number:TR 34 SW 1747
Type of record:Monument
Name:Two Roman floor surfaces, Cowgate Hill, Dover

Summary

Two Roman floor surfaces were identified during an archaeological evaluation carried out by Canterbury Archeological Trust in 2009 at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, Dover. The earlier of the two was situated upon a levelling layer of brown clay and was composed of characteristic Roman opus signinum (pink concrete). This was later replaced by a rammed chalk floor. It is possible that both of these floors are associated with a Roman structure situated within the interior of the Roman fort of the Classis Brittanica, but the limited scope of the investigation means that this was not confirmed. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)
