Foundations of an early barrack block (A6) were located during excavations at the Car Park site on the north side of Queen Street in 1971.

The remains consisted of two short sections of rammed chalk foundations, these likely represent an unfinished barrack block. Little of the structure was revealed due to the heavy damaged caused by later activity at the site, but the surviving evidence revealed that the walls were 70cm wide and were the right distance apart to have created two rooms each about 3.7m wide.
