Summary
During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in 1970 in an area which was originally occupied by a small car park on the north side of Queens Street a gutter like drain constructed of oblong chalk blocks was traced for a distance of 21m, north-south along the line of the road between barrack B21 and B22. (location accurate to the nearest 2m based on available information).

During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in 1970 in an area which was originally occupied by a small car park on the north side of Queens Street a gutter like drain constructed of oblong chalk blocks was traced for a distance of 21m, north-south along the line of the road between barrack B21 and B22.
It was directly associated with the first layer of metalling apparent in this area and may therefore also be associated with the period one developments of the adjacent barrack blocks. (1)
