Excavations in an area which was originally occupied by the Cause Is Altered Public House near Princes Street (Cause Is Altered Site) in 1971, revealed the remains of large chalk block drain, which was traced for a distance of 3m east-west across the site.
This was a major drain with very large side walls, 40-48cm wide, built of tufa and chalk blocks, which survived to a height of 67cm (five courses). Its bed was lined with gravel and was 40cm wide, no trace of a capstone survived. (1)
