Summary

During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in an area covering most of the disused burial ground of St. Martin-Le-Grand's church (Burial Ground site) were undertaken in 1970, during this, a substantial chalk block drain was uncovered near the south west corner of the north gate and traced for a distance of 6m across the site. During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. Excavations in an area covering most of the disused burial ground of St. Martin-Le-Grand's church (Burial Ground site) were undertaken in 1970, during this, a substantial chalk block drain was uncovered near the south west corner of the north gate and traced fro a distance of 6m across the site.

It consisted of large chalk blocks forming all four sides, the sides laid vertically and the top and base horizontally, giving a width of 24cm wide by 18cm high. Its flow was clearly south east, towards the harbour. (1)
