Summary

During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dovers Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, sections of all four walls of the Classsis Britannica were located and recorded. During excavations in an area covering most of the disused burial ground of St. Martin-Le-Grand's church (Burial Ground site) part of the northern wall of the CLBR for was uncovered. The wall was traced in this area for a distance of 30.12m and represents the best preservation of the forts wall located in this programme of investigation. During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, sections of all four walls of the Classis Britannica were located and recorded. During excavations in an area covering most of the disused burial ground of St. Martin-Le-Grand's church (Burial Ground site) part of the northern wall of the CLBR for was uncovered. The wall was traced in this area for a distance of 30.12m and represents the best preservation of the forts wall located in this programme of investigation.

The width of the wall is uniformly 1.17m to 1.18m and it survived to a maximum height of 1.15m (maximum of eight courses). It was constructed of chalk and tufa blocks, set in a tufa mortar with a core of chalk rubble. (1)
