During an archaeological evaluation carried out in 2009 by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, at least 2 Roman floors were found beneath No. 5, along with at least two demolition deposits. The floors were revealed by the removal of 19th century cellar walls. The earliest floor consisted of a layer of creamy chalky clay just above the natural coombe rock, while the second was located above a Roman demolition deposit and consisted of trodden orange-brown clay with chalk grit. The final Roman deposit within the sequence seen here was a further demolition deposit. This was all sealed by thin layer of compact chalk rubble and soil which contained occasional fragments of post-medieval red brick. All of the layers were cut by the 19th century cellaring and drain which were also located at this site. (1)
