During an archaeological evaluation in 1990 the chalk-block foundations of a number of structures were located in trench 2, probably of 2nd century date and related to the use of the area as a Classis Britannica fort (c. AD 138-208)

The structures included:

Excavators reference AB-2-1 : Two chalk block foundations / walls forming an internal corner. Related stratigraphy almost totally destroyed by cellars.

Excavators reference AB-2-2: North-south chalk block wall

Excavators reference AB-2-3: low level north-south chalk block wall, earlier than AB-2-2 and cut by grave.

Excavators reference: AB-2-5: another north-south chalk block wall partly cut by sewer trench and above AB-2-6

Excavators reference: AB-2-6: low level north-south chalk block wall, sealed by AB-2-5.

Most related stratigraphy had been destroyed by cellaring. It is not clear if dating evidence was found but the excavators concluded that the features must relate to the 2nd century use of the site.(1)
