During an archaeological evaluation in 1990 a steep sided Roman ditch was found, probably of 2nd century date and related to the use of the area as a Classis Britannica fort (c. AD 138-208) The ditch ran almost exactly north-south, was c. 0.6m wide, steep sided and sealed by metalling. It was not fully excavated.(1)
