Site of Martello Tower No.17. The Martello Tower was investigated on historic 1:2500 Ordnance Survey mapping during historic mapping enhancement as part of Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey - the tower is visible on the Epoch 3-4 (1908 and 1938) editions and is labelled as being 'In Ruins'.

[TR 14523329] Martello Tower (In Ruins) (NR) (1) [TR 14523329] Martello Tower (No.17) (2) No remains in situ, only a few fragments on the foreshore. (3) TR 146333. Martello No.17 built in 1805. It was practically destroyed by the sea before the Second World War, but the ruins are visible. (4,5)

The tower was built in 1805 but was largely destroyed by coastal erosion before 1939. A field visit in 1962 identified some ruins (3 and 6), and a publication in 1977 describes the some remains were still visible. (4) The collapsed tower was visible on aerial photographs in 1942 but no remains were visible on recent aerial photographs.
