Summary

Martello Tower No.22, built as a pair with No.23 (TR 13 SW 11) to protect Willop Sluice, in Hythe Road, no 22 was demolished in 1956 for road improvements by Kent County Council. It was in a bad state of repair, but proved difficult to destroy, and high explosives had to be used. The Martello Tower was investigated on historic 1:2500 Ordnance Survey mapping during historic mapping enhancement as part of Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey and is visible on the Epoch 3 and 4 (1908 and 1938) editions.

Martellow Tower No.22, built as a pair with No.23 (TR 13 SW 11) to protect Willop Sluice, in Hythe Road, no 22 was demolished in 1956 for road improvements by Kent County Council. It was in a bad state of repair, but proved difficult to destroy, and high explosives had to be used. (4)

The Martello Tower) is visible on the historical aerial photographs before it was demolished in 1956. The tower was viewed as part of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment NMP. (5-10)
