During excavations associated with works on the York Street bypass in 1971, in an area just to the north of that occupied by the Roman fort of the Classis Britannica, an aqueduct was uncovered and recorded. This aqueduct relates to the complex series of drains, culverts, water pipes and sewers which have been uncovered within the walls of the fort.
The aqueduct was constructed of large chalk blocks bonded with chalk and clay with an overall width of 2.1m and maximum height of 0.9m. A rectangular channel was located at its centre, through which the water would have flown. This was 50cm wide and 40cm deep. In terms of its relation to the CLBR fort it lies at the highest north-west corner of the fort and would have therefore, by gravity alone, have been able to reach all of the fort's interior structures.
