One of four bastions forming part of the Sheerness Lines. Construction began in 1797 along with Bastion No.4 incorporating the earthworks of the earlier Fort Townsend and was completed by 1816. The monument was demolished along with No.4 sometime between 1967 and 1972 and a steel works built on its site. Part of the Moat defences between the two bastions survive as a cooling pond TQ9126074644.
