In mid October 1941 the ‘Old Boys’ Club at the rear of the Red Lion Inn’was found unsuitable for use as a civil-defence warden’s post. The wardens were offered the use of a room in Mrs Chapman’s House in Laundry Lane. This was a building known as ‘Hillside’ and was occupied from 17 December 1941. Neither Laundry Lane nor Hillside can be easily traced today. (The grid reference is based on the assumption that Laundry Lane has now been renamed Conyngham Lane, extending up the hillside, with ‘Laundry Cottage’ at its northern end. (The ‘laundry’ in question seems to have belonged to Bifrons Park, Patrixbourne.))
