The extent of a large area on the coast around Holmstone and South Brooks, thought to be an early firing range, has been given a parent monument polygon during historic mapping enhancement as part of Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. The area contains features including gun targets, casemates, revetments, butts, and splinter-proof features – which have all received individual child monument records – and appear to have been constructed from the surrounding sediments (possibly gravel/shingle).
The site is only visible on the Epoch 3 (1909) edition of historic 1:2500 Ordnance Survey mapping [1]. Epoch 4 (1938) mapping is not available for this area [2], and no such site is visible on MasterMap (2009) [3].
