Four earthwork mounds labelled as ‘Artillery Butts (disused)’ are visible on the Epoch 2 and 3 (1899 and 1908) editions of historic 1:2500 Ordnance Survey mapping [1 & 2], located on the coast at Denge Marsh beach. None of the features are present on the Epoch 4 (1940) edition of the mapping [3].
Three of the earthworks are sub-rectangular in plan and measure 74m by 12m and 85m by 21m. The remaining two earthworks are smaller features visible as sub-circular and sub-oval in plan. The features are all located within close proximity to one another.
Interestingly, the earthwork located to the SW of the cluster is in the same position and has the same general size as a possible wreck mapped from aerial photographs (NEEDS NUMBER). Therefore, it is possible that the wreck site has been misidentified and is actually the remains of the artillery butt.
The extents of the artillery butts were given individual monument polygons (mapped from the Epoch 2 (1899) edition [1]) during historic mapping enhancement as part of Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey.
