During archaeological excavations associated with the Channel Tunnel Rail Link from 2001-2003 a substantial medieval trackway running along the western side of the Ebbsfleet river was uncovered. The trackway was exposed over an area of 150 m and was up to 5 m wide, it comprised a chalk consolidation layer which lay above Roman and in some areas, alluvial deposits, with one or more gravel surfaces laid on top. Finds of horseshoes suggested a 14th century date. At its southern end the trackway was accompanied by a ditch flanking its southern side. (1)
