Excavation in 2000-2002 carried out as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link found an early medieval sunken-feature building to the south of the Springhead area. It was 3.8 m x 3.10 m in size with a post hole at each end. Three other post holes were within the structure and may represent a re-building of the structure at some time. C. 5 m to the north was a pit that contained occupation debris including pottery, carbonized grain and hazelnut shells that produced a radiocarbon date of AD 500-630 and AD 530 - 640. C. 5 m to the east a gully, both of the same period. 68 sherds of pottery were recovered from the SFB. (1)
