Excavation in 2000-2002 carried out as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link found an early Anglo-Saxon pit (pit 2874) that contained a Roman Polden Hill brooch, a shale spindle-whorl, a bucket handle, a copper alloy sheet fragment, an unidentified iron object and 'one Roman and two Saxon pottery sherds'. It was situated approximately 125m to the north of another Anglo-Saxon pit. It was 1.3m by 1m in plan and 0.3m deep and cut Roman deposits which filled the east side of the Ebbsfleet channel. (1-4)
