Excavation in 2000-2002 carried out as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link found an early Anglo-Saxon sunken-featured building in the vicinity of the Western Roman Complex, Northfleet.

Saxon activity on the site of the Western Roman Complex was limited to a single sunken feature building (SFB)(1)

SFB 20186 was orientated NE-SW and was located to the north-west of the main area of Roman activity. IT was sub-rectangular and measured 3.90m length by 3.25m width and 0.27m in depth. The base was flattish with steeply sloping sides with the exception of the south-western end which sloped gently.(1)

Two post-holes were located at the south-western and north-western ends. (1)

There were three fills which produced a single sherd of residual Thameside/Upchurch grey ware. (1)

Location accurate to 2m based on available information.
