Monument details

HER Number:TQ 67 SW 1426
Type of record:Monument
Name:East range at Northfleet Roman villa

Summary

After c. AD 120 the large NW-SE aligned building on the site was demolished and replaced with a north-south aligned structure, 22m x 9m in size. The building had stone footings and timber or daub elevations but covered in limewash or stone. It was set in an industrial landscape comprising a limekiln, wells and cisterns. C. AD 150 a new range of rooms was added to the west and north. Shortly afterwards much of the building was demolished to be replaced by a large aisled building measuring 39m x 13m. During the 3rd century the building became disused, possibly aided by a fire. A new bath-suite was, however, constructed in the east of the building.

Part of this remained operational in the 3rd century and perhaps into the 4th century(1-7)
