Summary

In c. AD 50 a large building was constructed on a north-east to south-west axis. It was defined by large post holes and a gully or beam slot at its southern end. It was demolished to make way for the main villa building in c. AD 120.

Excavations associated with the Channel Tunnel Rail link in 2001 discovered extensive evidence of a Roman villa complex at Northfleet (see TQ 67 SW 38).

In c. AD 50 a large building was constructed on a north-east to south-west axis. This was the first major strcutre on the site and pre-dated the main villa. It was 36m long and 11.5m wide and was defined by large post holes and a gully or beam slot at its southern end. It was demolished to make way for the main villa building in c. AD 120.(1-7)

Most post holes were cut into the natural soil. Some of the post holes contained North Kent/ South Essex shelley ware consistent with an early date,
