Excavation in 2000-2002 carried out as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link found a rectangular structure c. 4.5m x 6m in size. The structure contained a small hearth and a large oven. A poppyhead beaker was placed on the oven after it went out of use. The building went out of use c. AD 170. The date of this beaker suggests an end date AD. 170 for the building as well. The building’s alignment broadly followed that of early Roman terrace over which it is located. The foundations were shallow, approximately 0.75 m wide, and comprised a mixture of mainly crushed chalk – along with some larger pieces, flint nodules and occasional patches of mortar, presumably providing the base for a timber structure. Two successive yard surfaces, both comprising flint cobbles set in chalk foundation layers were located to the south of it. (1)
