Traces of medieval walls, mainly fragments of undercrofts, were recorded during works associated with the A20 road and sewer scheme, to the north of the undercroft opposite the Crypt Restaurant and the tower, the general line of the eastern Medieval street frontage of Bench Street was clearly defined through these remains (1).
