This feature is recorded in the English Heritage Historic Area Assessment of St Mary Hoo Parish. The report states: "On the north side of the parish church were a small group of farmworkers' cottages and the village poorhouse which became redundant in 1835 following the creation of the Hoo Poor Law Union…The Red House is a red-brick building that was constructed on the site of the village poorhouse, probably in the mid-19th century and enlarged in the 20th century".
