The Canterbury UAD states that the earliest reference to this inn found is the listing in Pigot's Directory for 1828 where it is given as Blue Anchor, Dover Lane with Thomas Hearne as innkeeper. Pigot's Directory's for 1832-34 and 1840 lists it in Dover Street with James Morgan as innkeeper. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map of 1874.
In 1878 - 1882, directories list the innkeeper as George Halsey. By 1888-89 the innkeeper was G. T. Hogben; and by 1899-1900 the licensee is listed as Francis Lynch.
The inn subsequently closed between 1900 and 1930, as Kelly's Directory for 1931 no longer lists a public house, a dairyman by then is listed as occupying the premises.
