The Canterbury UAD states that this was a Whitbread/Now Free House.

In 1882 this inn was called the Railway and the innkeeper was Robert Cole. In 1889 the Directory listed it as Railway Hotel with George Pope in charge.

In 1908 it was the Railway Inn and the innkeeper was still George Pope. He was Mayor of Canterbury in 1924-26.

In January 1983 the name was changed once again and it became The Old Locomotive.
