A Whitbread/Mackeson & Co./Beer & Rigden inn.
The age of the Hop Poles is uncertain. It was mentioned in Bagshaw's Directory in 1847 with the innkeeper being Daniel Gann and he was still in that position in 1855.
Mrs Wraight was listed as innkeeper in Bednell's Directory in 1888. In the 17th century there was a dwelling house on this site, possibly with permission to sell ale.
In 1903 the Hop Poles was in a sad state of dilapidation and in 1904 Beer & Rigdens rebuilt what is now the Hope Poles.
About 40 years ago G H Rainbird, a traveller, writing about inns in Kent, wrote:
'Canterbury has so many inns big and small as to defeat any attempt at detailed description, but mention must be made of the Hop Poles on the Ashfod Road, a pleasant inn past the castle and, as its name denotes, opposite some hop gardens'.
The inn is still there but alas, no more hop gardens.
