The Canterbury UAD states that this inn was previously owned by the Whitbread House.
In the 17th century the present Three Compasses was called the Carpenters Arms and there is still a similarity in the inn signs.
This pub was almost certainly built at the beginning of the 20th century but there was an inn on or near this site mentioned in a Licensing List of 1846, and in Bagshaw's Directory in 1847. In 1851 there is a Police Report about landlord John Murphy - being open out of hours.
Many inns with names such as Carpenters Arms had some connection with early craft guilds or trade unions.
