The Canterbury UAD states that this inn was previously owned by Fremlins House.

An inn called The Black Lion appears on a Licensing List of 1846 but it is difficult to discover much of interest about this inn. John Bean was innkeeper in a Directory of 1878. This inn was used mainly by residents, soldiers and some road users.

The Black Lion closed in 1969. Full transfer of licence to Brewery Secretary took place in 1969 and provisional removal of licence to Old Coffee House, Burgate, 1969. Probably the licence now held by Beni Inn originally belonged to The Black Lion.
