Vauxhall Brick Works, on the south side of the Canterbury-Sturry road and east of the barracks, has yielded palaeolithic implements including Acheulian ovates and Mousterian points. Various pits were open at different times, and Gaskin's Pit was the furthest north-east from the Cavalry Barracks. The precise provenance of any finds is unknown. (1-3)
