Summary

Site of a Roman villa and bath house discovered during the construction of Tivoli Park Avenue in 1924. Coloured fresco from four different rooms, hypocaust tiles, nails, a razor and bronze fibula, an iron window frame, 2 pottery kilns, a rotary quern were found. Also found was an Iron Age urn and Celtic pottery. Finds were dated from 400 BC to AD 400

(TR 35097009) ROMAN BUILDING [R] site of [NAT] (1) During the construction of Tivoli Park Avenue, Margate in 1924, Dr Arthur Rowe observed a house which could not be excavated, the road having been built over it. Walls 3.5 feet thick, of large flints from the North Foreland area, were found W of the road, as well as coloured fresco from four different rooms, hypocaust tiles, nails, a razor and bronze fibula, supposedly of the C1st and, it is said, an iron window frame. (2) Foundation of at least three rooms are visible on the E side of the road (a). Siting confirmed (b). (3) Pottery from this site is on exhibition in Margate Public Library. There is no record of subsequent finds from the area which is now fully developed. (4) A Roman rotary quern was found, by chance, near the Tivoli villa site. (5) Roman house found in Tivoli Park Avenue in 1924. (6) In Tivoli Park, N of Hartsdown Road, at least four rooms of a Roman villa have been discovered. (7) TR 352702 (Sited to nearest 50 m) Romano-British villa excavated in 1923. Site No.7. (8) Notes on an Iron Age urn. (9) This site was partly excavated by Dr A. Rowe in 1924. The finds include two pottery kilns, midden material, cooking stones, a large Celtic 'comb-worked' vessel. Pottery making continued at this site from c500 BC to c400 AD.
