(Extends from TR 33345898 to TR 33216000) The Monks' Wall (G.T.) (1) A sea wall of sand and stone, between Stonar and Cliffsend, belonging to the Abbot of St.Augustine, is mentioned in 1280. (2) 'The Monks' Wall' consists of a bank and ditch, (see section) similar to a number of other banks in the area. A cart track now runs along the top of the bank. Published 25" survey revised. (3) Additional Bibliography (4) Part of the rounded end of the wall, immediately south of the 1914-18 break was sectioned and found to be partially modern work, a tidying up operation, and not surviving Medieval earthwork (5). A detailed topograhpic survey and wriiten record was made of the wall in 2014 identifying subtle difference across the area which may be due to original construction or reflect subsequent modifications.
