Summary

A curvilinear feature is located in fields to the north of Monkton. This feature was identified as a cropmark in aerial photgraphs taken in 1946. This is thought to represent the remains of extensive slit trenching, possible defensive in nature or maybe created for training purposes before the World Wars.

Extensive slit trenching running through the prob barrow cemetery at
TR 288659, runs TR 28116595 - 28806577 - 29326518. (1)

The cropmarks remians of a a network of crenellated slit trenches seen on aerial photographs extending either side of the A299 to the east of the Monkton roundabout. The trenches can be seen extending SE past a patch of woodland north of Walters Hall Farm. These remains are visible on aerial photographs taken in 2015 as part of the Historic England Reconnaissance Recording programme.(2)
