TR 21203740. A medieval pit, Cherry Garden Lane, Folkestone, was discovered in September 1978 with the finding of medieval pottery by S.E.G.B. workmen re-directing a gas main in advance of the construction of the M20 motorway. The site is at the base of Castle Hill, and the area now falls within an island of disused land between Churchill Avenue, and the new M20 roundabout. John Willson was informed of the site, and given the pottery by Ian Lancefield, the S.E.G.B. site agent. A trench dug by the S.E.G.B had cut through a roughly circular pit, c.65 cm in diameter with steep sides, and a minimum depth of 45 centimetres. The creamy-brown and brown clay-loam filling contained eight-seven potsherds, representing a minumum of twelve vessels datingto c.1250-1350 AD. It was sealed by a clay and chalk surface. The assemblage included cooking pots, bowls and jugs, and appeared to be from a single source, perhaps of local origin. Similar wares are found elsewhere in Kent. (1-2)
