Summary
A Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe found in the sea off Whitstable. It was purchased from a Mr WC Wells in 1916 or 1917. Mr Wells stated at the time that he possessed 3 such axes, all brought up at the same time by an oyster dredger working about a mile from the shore. One other axe was acquired by the museum from Mr Wells but was subsequently returned to him. The whereabouts of the third axe are not known, though it may well be the axe recorded as TR 16 NW 13, donated to Maidstone Museum in 1916 by someone else.

In Maidstone Museum is a small looped and socketed axe labelled, `dredged up from Whitstable', but about which nothing further is known. However, it bears a marked similarity in size, shape and patina to the one known member of a group of 3 axes with a similar provenance (see TR 16 NW 13) (1). A Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe found in the sea off Whitstable, and now in Maidstone Museum (accession number 1916.38). (2) additional reference (3).
