31 trenches were excavated across the Rochester Riverside development site in late 2004 and early 2005. In trenches in the north eastern part of the site a cobbled surface aligned northeast-southwest was found. It was provisionally dated to the Roman period and identified as a road leading towards the waterfront, away from the Roman town wall to the southwest (1).

The road was made up of a bedding layer of angular flints, at a depth of 2.4m OD. There were two further bedding layers above this and above these was the road surface itself. It was 0.12m deep, 4m wide and ran at a northeast-southwest alignment at 2.8m OD. A deposit of clay overlying the road surface produced sherds of pottery dating to between AD 175 and 250 (2).
