A series of clay floors and metalled surfaces, dating to the later fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were discovered within a trench duing an archaeological evaluation that was carried out on land to the rear of 60-76 High Street, New Romney. Though no structural elements were identified, these surfaces provide evidence for a building, dating to the later medieval period and therefore potentially contemporary with the Church of St Martin’s. As no similar deposits were found in trenches 1, 3 and 4, this building appears confined to an area of approximately 15 m. by 15 m. in the north-western limits of the site. However as its northern limits have been cut away by the boundary fence it appears to have originally extended beyond the site into the area of St Martin’s Field, and could therefore be associated with the church. The exact position of the church is unknown; any associated structures would be of local and regional interest. (information summarised from sources) (1-2)
