Monument details

HER Number:TR 04 NW 5
Type of record:Monument
Name:Plantagenet's Well, Boughton Lees

Summary

A circular well, 1.0m across and about 4.0m deep is located to the west of Boughton Lees. The well is made of both flint and some brick, the upper part relined with hand-made brick of a later date. The well is disused and rubbish filled. It is alleged that Richard Plantagenet, natural son of Richard III, fled to the area and his burial in 1550 is recorded in the Eastwell parish register: it is suspected that this is where the name of the area originates.

[TR 02004730] Plantagenet's Well [NR] (1) There is a tradition that Richard Plantagenet, natural son of Richard III, fled to and lived in a small house in what later became Eastwell Park. His burial in 1550 is recorded in the parish register. [Although no reference to the well was encountered, this story is probably involved in the name]. (2) A circular well, 1.0m across at present about 4.0m deep, lined with flint and some brick, the upper part relined with hand-made brick of a late date. There is a shallow circular depression in the ground to the NE. The well is disused and rubbish filled. (3)
