[TR 07232972] Church [NR] (site of) (1) Blackmanstone Church, dedication unknown, fell into decay in the early 16th century and has since disappeared. The parish is now incorporated into Newchurch and Beresford lists Blackmanstone as a lost village. The moat-like feature at TR 06752978, near Oldhouse Bridge, may be the site of the Court Lodge noted by Hasted as being close to the site of the church on the other side of the road, and described by him as having been down many years. (2-6) The site of the church is marked by a slight mound in a pasture field at the position shown by the O.S. In the opposite field across the road to the S.E. are some vague mounds together with some old drainagechannels, all under pasture, which may represent the site of the Court Lodge or of the DMV. The square waterfilled feature at TR 06752978 would seem to be some form of stock enclosure or refuge rather than a homestead moat. (7) Blackmanstone. TR 072296. Listed as a deserted medieval village in Kent. (8) Maurice Beresford and John G. Hurst eds Deserted Medieval Villages, 1971, list 69 places for Kent in their County Gazetteers of Deserted Medieval Villages. In most cases there is nothing to prove that there was a village at the sites in question. A deserted church site or isolated church certainly does not prove the existence of a deserted village.
