Summary
A coastal battery or small fort built in 1798, and modified in 1860. Although disused by the end of the 19th century, it was anecdotally reoccupied in World War II. This area was surveyed from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project. Two WWII period nissen huts were visible on the south-eastern side of the battery on aerial photographs of 1946. These huts may be associated with the possible re-use of the battery during the Second World War. They had been removed by the time of the next available vertical aerial photographs of 1962.

(TR 088186) Dungeness No. 1 Battery (1) TR 088186. Dungeness No. 1 Battery, 1798 with 4 x 24 pounders. (2)
Description from record 462688:
The battery built in 1798 was a self-contained triangular fort on a small scale. The terreplein, slightly raised to give command of the sea, accomodated 4 or 5 24-pounders, and a brick loop-holed wall 3.5 metres high extended from the corners of the terreplein to form a sharp point at the rear. The main entrance, guardroom and ancillary buildings were spaced along the exterior walls. In 1860 the battery was remodelled, receiving 1 x 7-inch breech-loader and 4 x 68 pounder smooth bores, all on traversing platforms. Although disused by the end of the 19th century, it was periodically occupied thereafter. The 1911 census shows that several families were living there and it may have been reoccupied in World War II. Only the emplacements now survive.
