[TQ 8792 6195] Sutton Baron [NR] (1) The manor house of Sutton Baron in Borden parish is a Tudor timber- framed house. It was the birthplace of Dr Robert Plot (1641-96) who made additions to the building. (2) Sutton Baron is as described by Igglesden although most of the timber house is hidden by the late 17th century brick additions and stucco: it is now divided into two cottages. GPS AO/63/120/1 and 2. (3) Sutton Baron and Sutton Baron Hall (formerly listed as Sutton Baron Farmhouse, Grade II, Sutton Baron Road (north side). House, now 2 houses. 15th and 18th century. House, now 2 houses. C15 to C18. Timber framed, part exposed, part clad with plaster, and structural red brick with plain tiled roofs. Originally a Wealden hall house, with mid C17 wing added to rear for Robert Plot the elder (d. 1669), and early C18 red brick wing added to that. Road front: 2 storeys and hipped roof, the C18 wing left. separately hipped. Two projecting tile hung gables to right and stack to centre rear, Irregular fenestratiun of five windows, 2 glazing bar sashes to left and 3 wood casements right on first floor, 2 french windows and 2 wood casements on ground floor, with half-glazed door in 1 storey gabled porch centre right bearing plaque: P Left return front: restored Wealden house R W. with, exposed close- studded timber framing, of 4 bays with C17 red brick extension to right. Two storeys, with plinth to right, jettied to left and right, flying wall plate on arched braces over recessed central bays, hipped roof with gablets, stacks to centre rear arid end right. Irregular fenestration of 4 wood casements on first floor with blocked mullioned lights to right, and 2 wood case- ment, central brick and wood mullioned.segmental bay window, C20 mullioned window right, and segment-headed casement end right on ground floor. C20 plank door centre right. Interior: panelled interior to C18 wing, sone C17 panelling and late C17 staircase, and carved overmantel and wall paintings (covered awaiting restoration at time of inspection) in Wealden. Dr. Robert Plot (1640-96), Antiquary and first secretary to the Royal Society was born, lived and died in the house. (See B.O.E. Kent II 1983, 149; Igglesden, 24, 1930 p. 48H).
