[Name at TQ 85507255] Roman Potteries [R] (site of) [NAT] (1). Roman pottery kilns (2). This name applies "to a large extent of Saltings reaching from Lower Halstow on the south to the Medway on the north, over the whole of which these potteries formerly extended and from which the Roman pottery now generally known as Upchurch Ware came." (See TQ 86 NW 31 for general card (3). There is no evidence of pottery kilns in the area of the published name, but see TQ 87 SE 28 and 21 (4). North of Sharpness Saltings/Burntwick Island, general area centred approx TQ 85507255; Site of Roman pottery kilns, observed in the early - mid 20th century, but probably now destroyed by tidal erosion.
