Description from record TQ 44 SE 31 :
Listed building : no additional information available
In 2011 a dendrochronological analysis was done on oak timbers at Lockskinners. Six samples were taken and tested (three wallplates, Tie beam, crown post and the north rafter). The six samples matched a 91 year site chronology spanning from AD 1338 to AD 1428. Two precise felling dates were given in spring of AD 1429. Thus the construction likely occurred 1429 or soon thereafter. The timbers were probably locally sourced. Originally the building was a medieval open-hall of four bays with and end jetty. Three bays remain. The roof is gabled. (2)
In 2020 further dendrochronological analysis was completed with the aim of dating the primary phase of construction of the rear range, west end bay of the main range and the granary.
‘Measured tree-ring series from seven timbers sampled from the main range are matched together to form a 101-year site chronology, which is dated to span 1329 to 1429. Two precise felling dates in the winters of 1424/5 and 1425/6 and one probably precise felling c.1430, together with compatible felling-date ranges from four other samples dated, suggest construction occurred in 1430, or soon after. This date is consistent with the many open-hall stylistic elements recorded in this building. A second site chronology from three timbers sampled from the end bay of the main range forms a 139-year chronology, which is dated to span 1453 to 1591. One precise felling date in 1591/2, together with a compatible felling-date range for two other samples dated, indicates construction occurred in 1591/2. All the timbers dated likely came from local sources.
A granary was also examined, but the timbers were considered unsuitable for tree-ring analysis. However, from the visible stylistic features recorded construction around the 1650s is estimated.’ (3)
House of two medieval phases the first of which contains a formerly open 2-bay hall and parlour end and includes the upper end of an end-jetty house. The second phase involved the replacement of the lower service end or wing by a new end. There were further alterations in the mid 16th century. (4)
